Finished!
It seems that the Classic Quarter and fog go together, whichever direction you go...
Despite spending an hour de-clogging the bike last night, it still regularly refused to go onto the top chainring, and eventually gave up altogether... Otherwise everything went well and I was soon speeding past Penzance. The weather wasn't much better in Marazion...
I decided it was still too early for a pasty, and pushed on to Helston, where Mother's kindly treated me to a bacon roll, when they knew the reason I was caked in muddy road-spray was to raise money for ShelterBox -- thanks folks!!
Having refuelled, it was on to Lizard Point. A westerly wind had swung round to the south (of course), so I was treated to a headwind yet again. Feeling the end was in reach was enough to keep me going though, and it was soon time for a snap at Britain's most southerly point:
The legs were starting to feel a bit leaden at this point, but the thought of a bath and a beer kept the crank spinning and I eventually pulled in at home. By the time I realised I should probably have taken one last photo to mark the end of my 2011 miles journey, I was already recuperating with Radox....
So, 2011 miles, then. Or 2014.6 as it turned out.
Despite some of the kind comments I've received, I'm not pretending it's a massive achievement. At least, not on the scale of what some people do, and it's certainly nothing like the achievements of the good people at ShelterBox. But I feel very proud to have completed something that would take me a whole year, and forced me to get out and run/cycle when I would much rather not (thinks: ice, rain, night, occasionally all three!). And I'm enormously proud to have helped raise some money for ShelterBox, and had some great fun. I've also been massively impressed by my 'little' brother, as I mentioned a day or two ago.
The inspiration for raising money for ShelterBox came from my son Jesse, and a friend of his, who sold home-grown vegetables at the end of our garden path to raise money. This was when Jesse was just four years old, and his friend even younger. They even drew their own posters! I can't remember how much they raised, but it doesn't matter, really. Their efforts, and the fantastic response they had from the ShelterBox team when they took the money into the office, was enough to make me promise myself I'd do something too. Of course, I had no idea then that my lunatic brother would come up with the 2011 miles idea....
Next year, I think I'll join Jesse and sell vegetables instead!
Thank-you Jesse and David for the inspiration, Katharine for a year of unstinting support, ShelterBox and The Cornishman for their encouragement, along with dozens of Janathon runners, Twitter followers and blog readers. And thanks, of course, for the many donations, which I hope will still roll in for a day or two.
I know I've said it many times, but if you haven't donated already, here's another chance... (link).
Happy New Year to everyone reading this, and I hope you've enjoyed our little blog.
